Node won't rejoin Galera Cluster

I have a 3 node Galera cluster. One of the nodes got out of sync and took itself out of the cluster. In attempting to rejoin the cluster it failed part of the state transfer process (see attached log) and now each time it starts up it generates a "Failed to recover position" error.

It looks like the state files got transferred ok, but there was some error when attempting to process them.

What went wrong and how can I rectify the situation.
